Afternoon all, just picked up DW this June '07. So, excited as I am about the game, something has me down...
Even for version 1.04 (didn;t need to update it with the patch, the download came automatically updated), something seems odd. Lets look at the Seahawk Demo, shall we?
Ok, everything is great, especially when I turn on the ESM tracker...woah! I have a good 8+ unknown contacts show up. So I head North, drop a few Shallow Passive bouy's (the "deep" bouys are too deep for this one) and again...woah! I get three to five possible sub contacts each with "Low Confidence"...
Ok, so I start checking them out using bouy search methods, MAD/SAD runs and hydrophone...
Now it turns out that most of the surface conacts aren't really there (visual confirm), but I can't seem to get any more info on the various sub contacts...this is the Demo, isn;t there only supposed to be one freighter and one sub?
Anyways, I'm getting bouy's reading various Freighters and some on subs but they're all over the place. And I'm getting no SAD readings what so ever when I check out each sub contact or each interection of bouy directional finds...
I could use some help here. I don;t want to be dissapointed by this game as I'm a huge Clany/Larry Bond fan and this is right up my alley of interest. Thanks!

strange, i tried the mission (using stock DW 1.4) and nothing strange happend. I only had two contacts, one freighter and one Victor-III.
Are you using Autocrew? Try to turn on show truth to see what is really around and what the A.I. thinks is around.
I'm no real expert on this, but perhaps a screenshot would help us.

I suggest you take a look at the Walkthrough I wrote here : http://www.commanders-academy.com/wiki/index.php?title=MH-60_Demo_Tutorial
At the moment it has no images, only text but at the bottom you can find the PDF file which comes with pictures. Give it a whirl and let us know if it helps you in understanding the game.
Cheers

Wow, I thought it was gonna take days for a reply, thanks guys!
Ok, i tried using Truth mode once and yea, only the Vic showed up, but it showed up immediately...no fair without the hunt.
I'm at work now, but later i'll post a pic of the issue...
I was reading further on this site (some GREAT help notes) and think it might be that I need to be higher up. I'm usually at 50', but didn't see that MAD range is usually higher up.
I'll try things with a higher altitude and see if it works...again, i;ve only put about 10 hours into the game, not including the nights and days i spent going over the manual before I ever touched the game ;-) And yea, i was using Autocrew, i prob shouldn;t, that may be it...
Thanks again, i'll be around this site more often!

My suggestion would be to to turn all autocrew off except for the radar. Use the radar to reveal the locations of any surface ships. If you need to class the ship, use ESM (manually) or the IR camera.
Sonar contacts not corresponding to those surface contacts become POSSUBs to investigate further.

I figured out what it was, too many sonar bouys.
So I got my first Victor kill last night, woo hoo! And wow, it 'does' feel good after all that work and reading.
But now I got this other problem. I tried a P-3 mission looking for the French sub and the three surface contacts at the straight always had an echo contact right in front of them to them. The actually contacts always had an unknown radar contact in front of it. And eveytime i'd delete unknown (found via radar), it would appear again even though we already had the "for certain" contact even within visual raneg...its just really annoying...

If you don't want the autocrew automatically reporting contacts, then turn off the autocrew.
EDIT: Or better yet, turn off the radar when you're done using it. It's a good habit to get into; there's no sense in possibly giving your opponents a bearing when you're not getting anything in return.

to many bouys on a helo never
i just ran the demo mission twice to try to see the troubles you are having, im srry but i couldnt recreate them
2 things i am doing diffrently than you which might be cause of your troubles, On the helo i dont use autocrew at all (you will get a mad announcment even though the AC is not on) and also i am using the LWAMI mod somthing that i highly recomend getting its usually the standered for online games and is a big improvment over the stock game.
both times i managd to score kills very quickly (under 16 min) my stratagy follows
first while in transit i like to climb between 1500 and 2000 feet while increasing my speed to max, i turn the radar on for 1 or 2 sweeps to get a fix on the friendly surface vessles (in this case the oiler) then go emcom (alawys remeber that radar can get you killed) verify that it is a neutral vessel with the ew and not a sub pointing a sam at you. (not really necessary but a good habit to get into) and deploy the mad dropping my altitude to between 300- 500 feet this is where i begin working bouys.
again using LWAMI so i may be getting better performance of my bouys than in stock!!
luckly in the demo mission 4 are already deployed for you and all should read hot, i like to clear my grams and set a freq alert to 50 htz and enable it, then using the first gram i start at 1 working my way to 4 switching them to directional and turning on the library as i go, usually the oiler will come through loud and clear but also on 1 or 2 you are going to find annother contact just giving off a faint low frequency read somewhere around 50htz the library will prolly spit out somthing like fishing boat (fishing boat is the default when it doesnt have anything else to give)
since the radar only gave the 1 surface vessel we know there is no fishing boat out there so this is a good place to start looking running close to that bearing line, time to drop a bouy prolly difar shallow at aprox the half way point since it will take some time to come up.
now that you have reached the area where the sub is you have 2 options u can drop in to have a look at the dip sonar (a tactic that may get you killed in a MP game) or move to a point where you are between the area u think the sub is and the oiler by this time the bouy you dropped should come up and give you a more solid bearing line on the sub if it starts reading victor 3 as oposed to fishing boat its very close to the bouy mark that and begin moving into the area possibly dropping annothe bouy in between the 2 (depending how spread out they are) and wait for the second bouy to come online)
once the second bouy comes on you should get annother reading (fishing boat prolly sub mabey) where the two bearings intersect thats where he is actually fly down to between the sub location and the goal line drop a dicass in front of him (giving enough dstance for the bouy to come online BEFORE he drives past it) and fly up to the intersection point the water is shallow theres a good chance that you will get a mad reading at this point if you do turn to attack set your torp stettings (to run a little shallower and raise the floor to the depth of the water he is in) i personaly like active cirlcle but whatever you perfer and drop it down there throat :attack:
if however u arnt lucky enough to get a mad reading update the bearing lines from your difars and by this point he should be passing close to the dicass move in for the kill and set it to active and begin yor run
things i am guessing from your post when a bouy gives you a contact the usefull information is the bearing line not where it places the symbol on the map (that is usually much farther than where the sub actually is) use 2 or even 3 or 4 bouys to triangulate its actuall position, and remeber if a bouy is giving a positive id than the sub is very close to the bouy postion almost on top of it
i hope this helps in some way, really its all about practice and learning to watch the waterfalls and getting a "feel" for how close the contact is to the bouys. and learning to dicpher between good info and bad
and hey welcome aboard!!!!

Well, i figured out what I was doing wrong save for one issue...turning the active bouy's "on"...I can;t seem to find how to do that?~?~?
The other issues did have to do with autocrew and the fact that I was getting confused by all the lines to these "possible" subs...It took me a few days to realize they aren;t subs but rather intersection points...
Anyways, i've got the hang of it now, as long as I can figure out the "how to make your bouys ACTIVE" bit....
Other than that, its not just a problem with mirror contacts next to each other, even after a fly over....
Thanks for all the help!

Your last problem is easily solved ... RTFM or the kinder version ... read the manual ... you will find information on that in the part about Sonar and stuff at the beginning of the manual. For the Helo Dipping sonar ... check the helo section.
