I have been having a problem with Active Sonar Evasion. I am fairly new to Dangerous Waters, though I do have a passive acoustic background so I do understand more than most for a newbie.

The mission that springs to mind at the moment is "Stalking The Bear". The kirov is pinging the living daylights out of me. Regardless of what I have tried I can't escape it. I have tried Fast, Slow, Deep, Shallow and all the in betweens. I have tried different angles of approach, even hiding with the biologics and yet it always results in the Helix being launched, passing over me and releasing a weapon... thus I'm detected and therefore end of mission.

I would appreciate anyone that can offer some advice on evasion of the pings for sub drivers.

Cheers,

Scotty

Like any other detection in DW, the main variable is range, and there are many factors that effect the range you can get detected at.

The rule of wrist is that skimmers will pick you up 10nm out. Factors working against the skimmer can reduce this. The biggest factor would be a layer to hide under, which could reduce the range by 50% or more. Other acoustic conditions matter too; a bottom limited SSP with sand/mud bottom will shorten the range about as much as a layer will. After that, there's your boat's aspect: bow or stern aspect will knock a bit of the signal down...I haven't tested it enough to know exactly how much, but I'd guess you can shave about 25% off that way.

And of course, if you get a chance, approach from astern in the sonar blind spot. (120 degrees in LW/Ami, 60 degrees stock)
