Obviously. Having or requiring distinct interfaces for every vessel is way too much work.

Who is up for doing the Tango class interface? Complete with all important stations? See what I mean?

What is needed is a set of generic interfaces that sort of work with submarines and vessels of the era they were made in. This is the list I suggest.

Civil War and before
World War 1
World War 2 Allied
World War 2 Axis
Early Cold War Soviet
Early Cold War Other
Early Nuc Soviet
Early Nuc Other
80's Soviet
80's Other
Modern Russian Nuc
Modern Russian Conventional
Modern Other Nuc
Modern Other Conventional
Future Russian
Future US
Future Other

The reason there are so many is to allow a WIDE range of vessels without their interfaces looking stupidly wrong.

I know it is a modern subsim! Please don't jump on me about those pre-cold war choices just yet! I will explain what I am thinking about them later.

I am against allowing these interfaces to be used in 3D. 3D makes things MUCH more difficult to code and handle. Keep in mind that more code equals more chances for bugs. 2D is clean and keeps your mind on winning the battle and not on how funny it is to make the screen dance with Track IR.

I forgot to add that of course. Custom interfaces can and ought to be made in the case of many base and of course well known submarines.

When I run a Seawolf.. I want the Seawolf interface. When I stalk a convoy in a Kilo.. I want a Kilo interface.. Etc...

Yes ..there will be generic interfaces .. even more generic ones. But don't get overexcited man. We're not at this stage at all.

I volunteered to do 2d work a long time ago and am still willing, although I expect it to be many months if not years before the sim is at that stage. Standing by, skipper!

Silent Hunter 2's boats all looked the same inside, but it didn't effect the playability.

The equipment did not vary all that greatly for the U-Boats throughout the war. So a generic interface is fine.

Things change rapidly when you are brining boats from other nations and time periods into the mix.

Sure. It makes the game more interesting too.
