Well, tonight I played a nice game of DW 1.03BETA plus the Lw/Ami 3 BETA.

Participants :

Molon Labe (Kilo Imp)
JoGary (688)
Luftwolf (Akula II)
Savages Wolfy (688)
OneShot (P-3C)

*** Mission Description / Brief (from the Mission File) ***

A Fleet ASW Protection scenario based loosely on the storyline of the Russian Ultranationalist War from Ghost Recon.

Red:
- 1 Akula I-Improved SSN
- 1 Akula II SSN
- 1 Kilo SS

Blue:
- Roosevelt Strike Group and embarked aircraft (FFG and MH-60 controllable)
- 1 P-3 (VP-8 at Souda Bay)
- 2 Los Angeles SSN

Victory conditions: Russian subs must inflict at least 50% damage on the Roosevelt.

Weather: Clear
Sea State: 2
SSP: Convergence zone
Bottom: Rock
Depth: 3000-9000ft in principal AO; nearby island shallows.

Background: The ruling Ultranationalist party of Russia has been backing a revolutionary movement in the former Soviet state of Georgia. The United States confirmed Russian involvement on 16 April 2008 with the capture of rebel leader Bakur Papashvili, who gave up Russian plans to use the revolution as a pretext for invasion. The United Nations condemned the Russian interfe
rence, and the US sent the USS Ronald Reagan to the Black Sea to support the legitimate Georgian government. US forces began fighting a limited war against the revolutionary forces.

The Russians have condemned the US for meddling in regional affairs, and have warned that further action could result in open conflict. Russian armor is currently massing on the border, and their fighter and bomber forces have been put on alert. Northern Fleet naval assets have been moved into the Mediteranean.

The US has decided to intervene directly if Russian tanks cross the border. Under the current force levels, nearly all the Reagan's sorties would have to be devoted to CAP rather than supporting ground operations, so another CSG has been called in. The Russians detected the Roosevelt strike group moving toward the Suez Canal on 1 May. They quickly warned the US that the carrier would not be permitted to enter the Black Sea.

At 0600 2 May, the Roosevelt had exited the Red Sea and was proceeding towards the Aegean...

*** End of Mission Description ***

Now what happend? At the beginning only the Surface contacts were visible to me, soon substituted by Link from the CSG. With me were JoGary and Wolfy in the 688s and AI S3s and an AI Helo. I started with laying a double buoy line with VLAD Deeps (due to the Mod at 1200ft) which was well below the layer of 354ft. When I was close to the end of my first buoy line the AI S3 stumbled upon (as would later develop) Molon Labe in the Kilo and kept on tracking him. That made it easier for me. During that time Wolfy and JoGary both came to PD to participate in the link and I was able to get a fix on both locations to avoid Blue on Blue. While laying the 2nd line of buoys one of the outermost buoys got active and since no surface contact was nearby I instructed JoGary to put an ear out toward that direction. It was just a guess as I couldnt verify anything because I was to low to establish a link to my buoy. I finished my 2nd line of buoys and moved on to the linked contact from the S3. I dropped buoys near the linked contact but didnt get a MAD return. I did a long turn and came down along the previously marked positions of the POSSUB. Fortunatly the S3 and the AI Helo were still on the sub and updated the position which turned out to be nearby and close to my intended flight path. I adjusted my waypoints and got ready for another buoy drop in case of MAD. That happend in due course and I dropped a DICASS along his projected course. I then came around for another pass. Since I took my time, the buoys were ready, but nothing on passive. I wasn't close so I waited with going active (I had 3 DICASS in close vicinity of the sub). Instead of going for another MAD I was about to drop a torp, as I had established that no friendlies were nearby and the torp would hopefully go somewhere not harmfull if he missed. Just seconds before I was in range I turned on the DICASS refined my targets position and dropped the torp practically right on top of Molon Labe. Lucky me - his SAM shot was a dud. So I escaped unharmed while he placed his sub on the bottom - forever.

Now on to the next contact. From my previous 300ft I climbed to 2000ft to establish contact to all of my buoys and looked out for the previously "suspect" buoy which was still showing "Hot". On closer look there was one 50Hz line which provided me with a bearing. I set my waypoints and flew down the bearing, again at 300ft and as expected got my MAD return. Unfortunatly I was flying in the wrong direction so no buoy for me. He was getting within 30nm of the CSG and JoGary said something about Torps in the water. So I gambled big time - I lined up on the MAD return on a reversed bearing and readied my 2nd torp for the mission. This one was going to be dropped as a Circle (the first one was a Snake) and I wanted to drop him on notification of another MAD return. I lined the plane up on the right course, set for 300ft and max speed (I was in a hurry - slower would have been better for the drop and aquisition success) with the finger poised over the launch button. The Torp was preset to go under the layer. I received the MAD Warning and immediatly launched the torp which turned right and came onto the sub from the north. After completing nearly a complete circle it locked onto something and homed straight in.

Shortly after that moment the game started to lag big time and it appeared that I had hit nothing or at max a CM. After 3-5 minutes of waiting on the lag, the game catched up and I learned of my hit. I actually got Luftwolf in his Akula 2 with the Torp. Now that was one hell of a lucky shot. Shortly thereafter the game was stopped by the host, even tho there was still the AI Akula out and about. In the replay I could see what happend and again, I was kinda lucky. As far as the AI Akula goes it was still well outside of range of CSG and just about to pass right between two of my buoys, so it would have probably been dead meat in the end. As far as torps fired from the bad guys, they were still visible but its unsure if they would have hit anything.

In the end I got two kills for two torps which is par for the course. Great game and with the exception of the lag at the end really fun. On hindsight I have to say I was gambling heavy, especially on the 2nd shot. Normal SOP should have been to clearly establish the identity of both subs and then prosecute once I had both a good ID and a good impression of their course and speed. It worked this time, but might not next time. So kids, don't do this at home

Attached is the Mission as send by MolonLabe. Take note, the mission was made with the Lw/Ami Mod in mind, so game experience without the mod might be completely different.

Good game, One Shot.

After piecing together what happened with Molon, I figured I had about 30 seconds to 3 minutes until dying by LWT, after the TIW from the Jo in 688i.... :attack:  :frown:

Cheers,
