View Full Version : Narrow band contact's?
I have seeing this on my narraw band contacts a nice size spike
that comes and goes ? Just jump's up then gone? try to move
indication over it to get a ID ? Sometimes I like to try and use
my bow sonar because you don't have a false contact:biggrin:
Lot's of time I am in shallow water when I see this I think?
Not sure I am a Newbee sonar operator
Have been running 1.03 beta and LWAMI ver 3 beta mod

We haven't had false contact anomalies since SCX, so I wouldn't worry about that.
The narrowband has about 30 seconds of history shown in the discrete frequencies area of the display. If you get the cursor over the bearing that the spike occured at, even after it has dissapeared, you will still be able to see the frequency lines.
If there were no lines, then this is probably a biologic or a passive CM. There could be any number of reasons why the signal fades and returns; this is built into 1.03 PB for one thing, also it could have something to do with the SSP. I don't know if they've modeled bottom bounce, but if they did, it might show up this way; in any case they way they've modeled sound propagation could cause you to lose a signal if you move away from a propagation path and then move into a new one. Of course, there's always good old terrain blocking, which occurs quite a bit in shallow water especially if you or your target are running as deep as you can.
Thank's Molon Labe for the info
We should meet someplace around Bloomington, and have a cup of coffie sometime. Are you in school IU? or work in Law at Bloomington?
I am retired from NWSC Crane, IN Was a Electronics Tech
Thank's again send me a PM sometime

I think the false contact he was meaning was the mirror contact on the TA. I would call it by its right name but i cant spell it
Hmm i will give it a try
Ambiguous. Not sure but i think that it :arms:

The ambiguous contact/mirror/ghost/whatever is always around when the main contact is around, it fades in and out with it, and will give you the same ID you'd get for the correct contact, since it actually is the same signal.

In sonar parlence, these are called transients. Transcients from a subsurface contact are bad. (They train very hard NOT to make transients) They can mean you've been detected and there is a weapon coming at you or soon will be.

Are you in a high sea state or in shallow water (or both)? Because it sounds like either the ship's screws are flying out of the water (which happens in game) or the contact is distant and you are only getting an intermittent signal from it. I see this a lot with the kilo in shallow water.
