Hi All,
Bought S.C.S. DW a long time ago. Played a couple times and for various reasons dropped the ball. Would like to learn to play. Have been reading the posts and have downloaded just about all off the manuels that I can find. A bit confused as to where to start. Read "OneShot's" suggestion about Heli, then Orion.
Puzzled about the LW-Ami mod and how to install. Downloaded 3.08 but in the directions it states to install the previous mods first. Can't find them. 3.07 link cannot be found. I've seen references to a Beta mod by LW-Ami. Where can I get the mods? Do I need them all?
Is it better to learn with the stock S.C.S Dangerous Waters program with the 1.04 update before messing with the LW-Ami mods?
Last big question: Since I only have access to the internet via a satellite connection (high latency) is it even possible to use multiplayer?
Thanks for your input.

By the way, looks like CADC underwent a bunch of changes since I logged on last (couple of years ago). Had to re-register to get on site. Glad to see One Shot and other helpful people are still here.

From the readme:
"TO INSTALL: Run the self-extracting .exe installer and follow the on-screen installer prompts. After installation, enable LWAMI using the JSGModEnabler."
That's it. You're not required to have any previous versions of the mod.
Is it better to learn with the stock S.C.S Dangerous Waters program with the 1.04 update before messing with the LW-Ami mods?
One philosophy is that if you start off with the stock sim, you'll have to unlearn a lot of what you've learned, so it would be more efficient to start off using the mod.
My philosophy is that you should start with the stock sim and upgrade to LWAMI after you get sick of it and notice that LWAMI will fix a lot of the shit that's making you sick. That way you'll have a better understanding of what the mod does and what it doesn't, which is good for you because that hightened understanding will lead to a more rewarding simulated experience, and good for "us" because you'll be less likely to scream OMG WTF LWAMI BUG!!!!11!1 over something that is normal for DW.
Last big question: Since I only have access to the internet via a satellite connection (high latency) is it even possible to use multiplayer?
Probably, but it depends how bad the latency is. DW's multiplayer architecture is horribly inefficient and does a poor job processing the relatively small amount of telemetry data that comes through. With that in mind, it's entirely possible that a moderate amount of latency won't even be noticed--after all, there isn't that much data to send anyways and DW is more a "game" of minutes than seconds (or split seconds like an FPS). That's only true to a point though, and I'd say if you're lagging by more than a full second you're likely to have problems. Below half a second and you should be in the clear.

Welcome back ...
As for your question where to start learning ... that depends on what do you prefer more .. slow subs or faster air plattforms. For the subs you might consider starting with the Kilo or one of the US Subs, there are numerous manuals around for dealing with them. Especially helpful for beginners are Molon Labes TMA tutorial as well as some walkthroughs for the Kilo Demo mission for example.
If you wanna go with the airplatforms, start with the helo first. The Airborne Ops Manual is applicable to the Helo as well and again there is at least one walkthrough for the Helo Demo mission around which should help you doing your first steps.
If you cant decide right off the bat I suggest you try both Demo Missions (they are in the full version too) while reading the walkthrough and simply see for yourself what appeals to you more.
If you have further specific questions or problems, feel free to ask - we will try to help to the best of our abilities.

Is the JSGModEnabler part of the self extracting .exe file? Or is this a tool somewhere else in DW?
Thanks again for your fabulous input. That's the one thing I remember about your posts in the past.

Obviously I do not know how to use the "Quote" feature. One time it worked and the other didn't

I must be missing something with the Demo Missions. They don't seem to explain anything. Can't follow along. Is there a text file or audio associated with Demo to find out what's going on?
As always, thanks for the info, RV'er1

The place to start is as obvious as it is cliche. RTFM. DW is a study-sim, so get studying! At a minimum, read the sections of general applicability and the section of your preferred platform.
By the way, don't agonize too much over what platform to start with. Just pick something that interests you and go with it.
I'm not aware of any "walkthrough" for the demo missions, so I can't help you there. I might have forgotten about one though. If you're doing subs first, my ASW training has a walkthrough. If you go airdale, Beer's P-3 (http://www.subguru.com/DW_missions/Beer_P3C_vs_Akula_II_Barrier_mission.zip) training (http://www.subguru.com/DW_missions/Beer_P3C_vs_Akula_I_Imp_Barrier_mission.zip) missions (http://www.subguru.com/DW_missions/Beer_P-3C_vs_Kilo_Active.zip) have "how-to" screenshots that are essentially walkthroughs. In any case, having a walkthrough isn't necessary at all. You'll have a general idea what you're doing after R'ingTFM, when you get unsure there's no shame in pausing it and referencing TFM quickly when you can't remember how something works or can't find the right switch.
Just like a n00b at A-school, you'll have to practice a bit before you get the hang of it and you're ready to take the training wheels off. There's a lot to absorb and it takes time. But you get out of it what you put into it.

Take a look at the DW Wiki ... both Walkthroughs are posted there, the MH-60 even as a PDF to download (next to being on the wiki of course).

Nice to meet you, RVer1. I'm quite a new recruit here and wasn't around when you last logged on. I've been playing Sub Command since 2002 and joined the forum after purchasing DW.
