Hi All,

Trying to learn this game, reading everything available. I am learning the MH-60R first as suggested. I've become quite good at locating a sub while playing the easy quick missions.

The biggest problem that I am having is the attack phase of the mission especially when I face an Oscar II. I can maneuver the helicopter over the contact and drop a torp on the track. I align the helicopter's track with the sub's track (shooting down the line). I've tried snake as well as circular attacks. The torp hits the CM and explodes and the Oscar II escapes. Have tried a double drop and still the Oscar escapes.

After my attack run, I'll turn on Truth to see where the target is located. I'll see my contact escaping right where I knew he was. I'll also see the counter measure symbol where my torpedo ended its run. I'll also see in the Mission Results that the sub sustained damage (don't know if it's from me or another platform in the mission).

Why does the torp explode instead of re-acquiring after passing through the noise maker? Is there a difference by using a Mk-46 vs a Mk-50. Will one be fooled more easily than the other? So far,I have been using only the Mk-50s.

Does anyone have some suggestions on how to do a successful prosecution?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Why does the torp explode instead of re-acquiring after passing through the noise maker?

- Added variable in "dangerouswaters.ini" which controls the likelihood of torpedos exploding
on countermeasures (e.g. ".PercentTorpsExplodeOnCM 0" up to ".PercentTorpsExplodeOnCM 100").
In multi-player matches, the host's .INI setting will be used by all players. By default
the value is set to ".PercentTorpsExplodeOnCM 50".

RVer1Engage from the front or side at close range, instead of from the rear quarter when CMs are most effective. Based on what you've said here, it's also possible that you'll need to score a 2nd hit to bring the Oscar down, although a direct hit should be sufficient for a single-shot kill.

Thank you Molon Labe for the info. Will try that. Is there a large percentage of explosions on CMs in real life?

We can only speculate about that because it's classified. My best guess is that expendable decoys would ordinarily not cause a torpedo to detonate. Towed decoys, on the other hand, might be able to draw on the power plant of the ship to create an electromagnetic field strong enough to trick a torpedo's magnetic detonator to activate.

Indeed. A front drop is usually unescapable for a sub.

That I know. Oscar IIs (and Typhoons too, I think) need two lightweights to die. Just killed one in a mission yesterday.

As for some tips on prosecuting them, well here's a few:

-It's usually best to set your torpedoes for circular run, so they can re-engage if they miss or are fooled by decoys

-You should normally never need to set the RTE (run to enable) to anything past 0. Doing this just complicates the drop, and can be avoided by simply flying closer to the target. Adding RTE time also gives the sub driver more time to react, which you don't want him to have.

-Don't use active sonar until you are ready to drop. You should be able to gain a passive only track on him that is good enough to engage. Using your active dipping sonar alerts the sub driver that your helo is near, and he will have more time to evade you (or, if you play multiplayer, he may try to surface and shoot you down!). Use your active sonar only when you are ready to attack.

Good hunting!

That's for LWAMI. The OP made it clear he was using stock DW.

Ha, I somehow missed the part where he said "The torp hits the CM and explodes and the Oscar II escapes." I am an idiot. Slap me.

However...I think it was still the same for stock DW.

While I don't know the exact numbers I'd say the Mk46 has a similar setting to the Mk50 (only a bit less in hit points I think), meaning you need one Mk46 in Stock while you need two Mk46 in LwAmi for the Oscar.

I guess. I just swear I remember that it took two air-dropped LWTs to kill the Oscar. No matter, it's been forever since I've played on stock DW.

Thanks for the tips, Have tried multiple torps against the Oscar and it does get better results. That and making an attack from the side rather then from the rear thus avoiding the CMs.

Now I have to figure our how best to attack an Oscar that's under the ice while I'm buzzing around the ice sheet in the MH 60R.

Hi All Again,

Thanks for all of the tips. I am using the LW-Ami 3.08 mod and the Oscar takes 2 - 3 hits to finally sink. The circle technique while over flying seems to work best. (It's nice when the MAD sings out and you have a weapon ready to go). Now, I've moved on to the Orion since there aren't many missions for the MH60 in the game other than quick missions. Don't know if I'll ever be ready for the FFG.

PS - How do you get the great graphics on the signature line?

Molon Labe

you just put a line in the sig that consists of the web address of the image, surrounded by image tags ( )

But how do you get the image into a web address first? I'm new to this type of posting. I have a flag .gif file that I'd like to put in my signature line and maybe some other stuff eventually (like your Battlestar Pegacus signature line). Where do I create a web page with my signature to post?

Also I have seen screen shots of sonar displays that have been posted in some questions on this forum. How do they get pasted into the post?

Thanks again for your help,

If your ISP gives you a webpage, you can post it there. Or you can link it from another site (although some sites might not like if you do that). There is always imageshack (http://imageshack.us/), too.

I've taken the liberty to fix your signature for ya. As you can see it works now.
