View Full Version : Submarine Dueling Ladder Tournament Rules

Molon Labe
10-13-2008, 09:18 PM
Overview
CADC's first tournament format will be the tried-and-true 1v1 sub format and will be scored using the ladder system. Players challenge each other to matches, report the outcomes to the board, and then the board will automatically rank and rate players based on the outcomes. Win and you move up, lose and you move down.

Registration
Players interested in participating may enter the Submarine Dueling Ladder here (http://www.commanders-academy.com/forum/tournament.php?do=viewladder&id=3), and select "join ladder."

Challenging Rules
Matches are set up based on challenges. To challenge a player to a match, go to the Ladder page (http://www.commanders-academy.com/forum/tournament.php?do=viewladder&id=3) and click your desired opponent's name. Also, go to the Challenges subforum (http://www.commanders-academy.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=93) and post a thread there. Make the subject line in the following format: [Match Type (sub duel)] [Challenger] v. [Challenged]. e.g. "Sub Duel MolonLabe v. OneShot". In the body of the post, include the dates and times that you'll be able to play the match.

Challenged players have four days to respond to the challenge by accepting the challenge on the ladder page (http://www.commanders-academy.com/forum/tournament.php?do=ladderchallenges) AND replying in the thread the challenger posted in the Challenges subforum. The challenged player is required to either expressly accept one of the challinger's proposed date/times or to offer an alternate time slot. Once a date and time is agreed upon, the match is officially scheduled. The official "meeting place" for the match will be FlashChat (http://www.commanders-academy.com/forum/misc.php?do=flashchat&room=1) here at CADC, although the players are free to agree to choose an alternate method to let each other know they are present and ready exchange IPs. If a time cannot be mutually agreed upon, then the challenge can be cancelled, but both parties are required to negotiate in good faith.

A player whose opponent does not respond to a challenge or does not attend a scheduled match will win that match by default (scoring is 1000 to 0). Defaults will not be awarded for failures due to connection issues (a fact of life with DW) or similar technical problems.

Going on Leave
If you will be unavailable to respond to or accept challenges, please make a post in the Challenges subforum. This way people know not to challenge you, and we won't default you for any unanswered challenges while you're on leave.

Match Setup Rules
Sim version: DW 1.04 +LWAMI 3.08 required

The players are free to decide among themselves who will host. The default rule is that the challenged player is allowed to host.

The players are free to choose a mission to play from a CADC-approved list. If the players cannot agree, the default rule is that the challenged player will decide.

Platform choice is at the individual players' exclusive discretion.

Multiplayer Settings
The following settings are required for all CADC matches:

Show Truth OFF
Quick launch, Quick repair, Quick reload OFF

Remaining options are at player discretion. If unable to agree, the default settings are

3D allowed
TMA, Active intercept, Radar, and ESM, Countermeasures autocrew allowed (but not required; don't "lock" it on)
other autocrew locked OFF

Approved Dueling Missions
Any submarine dueling mission currently or previously in use by the Seawolves (http://www.subguru.com/DW_missions/SW_Scenarios.zip), Global Naval Strike Force, or Naval Command HQ may be used in this ladder tournament, provided that the those missions do not include any armed AI platforms.

Other missions may be admitted on an individual basis. At this time, these missions include: Doggie Deep (http://www.subguru.com/DW_missions/MP2_doggy_deep_v1-32.zip) (by OKO), ...... (more to come, I'm sure...)

Missions may be added (or removed) from the approved list based on the following criteria:

Predictability and relative quality of starting areas
Probability of immediate detection
Reasonability of amount of civilian traffic and/or biologics
Size of OpArea relative to acoustic conditions (expected match duration)

CADC approved pack (http://www.commanders-academy.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=169&d=1224353884) added 10/18/08

Match Play Rules (Rules Of Engagement)
There is a 5-minute weapons-hold period at the beginning of the match; no weapons (torpedoes, missiles, mines) may be fired until after the 5-minute mark.

Weapons hold goes back into effect after two hours of elapsed time.

The match ends when either a player is destroyed or two hours have elapsed, AND the surviving sub(s) are no longer in danger from weapons already fired. (In other words, do not end the match until the weapons run out or until the shooter calls the other sub safe)

Disconnects, CTDs, and Premature Ending
The general rule in handling a disconnect, CTD, or a match ended before the conditions stated above, is to play the match over. If at least one hour has elapsed, they players may agree to a draw.

Exception: If a player was in imminent danger of being destroyed at the time of the CTD or disconnect, or premature ending of the mission, then the remaining player may request a Default from a CADC admin or by consent of the other player. The player requesting a default is required to provide CADC admins with a replay of the match for a default to be awarded, unless the opponent consents. Admins will grant the default if, based upon review the replay and other relevant circumstances, (1) based upon imminent danger, it appears that a kill was more likely to have occurred than not had the match continued, or (2) by clear and convincing evidence, the player deliberately ended the match to avoid a disfavorable outcome. If a Default is awarded, the defaulting player's sub is ruled killed for purposes of scoring.

For puproses of awarding a default, "imminent danger" includes (but is not necessarily limited to): (1) a torpedo has acquired the target sub, (2) a torpedo has acquired a decoy near the sub and acquisition after burnthrough is likely, (3) a torpedo is on an intercept course to the target, is within 5nm, and the requesting player can prove he/she had accurate bearing data and a range solution accurate to within 1nm, or (4) a SUBROC has been fired, the SUBROC's torpedo has not yet splashed down, and the requesting player can demonstrate that the SUBROC would likely have landed within 1nm of the target.

Scoring and Reporting
All CADC tournament matches are scored on a 1000 point scale. The basic scoring is 1000 points for a win, 500 points for a draw, and 0 points for a loss, and you get penalized for leaving the OpArea or killing neutrals. Here's how it breaks down:

Ownship survival AND presence* in the OPAREA at two hours elapsed = 500 points
[LIST]
Ownship damaged = -250 points

Enemy sub destroyed = 500 points

Enemy sub damaged = 250 points

Neutral killed by player = -500 points per kill
Neutral damaged by player = -250 points per platform damaged
Final score cannot be negative

*Presence in the OPAREA means either being within designated boundaries as shown on the map, or, if no boundary is designated, within 25nm of a point on the map designated as an area to be guarded and/or infiltrated. (in other words, you can't walk away with a 500 point draw by running away from the battle; you'll lose 500 to 0).

Points for damage are only awarded if it results from enemy action (i.e. Shkval or ramming); we cannot always know of damage from running aground so this is NOT accounted for unless it results in the sub sinking.

Report your score at the Challenge page (http://www.commanders-academy.com/forum/tournament.php?do=ladderchallenges) immediately after the match. If there is any dispute as to scoring, save the replay file and contact an admin.

Players are encouraged, but not required, to post AARs either in their Challenge thread or in the AAR section of this forum. However, any disconnect, CTD, or ROE violation MUST be reported in the challenge thread.

Rankings and Ratings
CADC uses the Elo ladder rankings system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system). This system rates players based on their wins and losses against other rated players. We start everyone off with a rating of 1000 points. If you win a match, your rating goes up; if you lose, it goes down. Moreover, the amount your ratings change depends on the difference in ratings between you and your opponent. If a player beats a much lower rated player, there will be little change in ratings; but, if a player beats a much higher rated player, the change will be significant.

In other words, if you want to climb the ladder, you need to challenge higher rated players and win.
