View Full Version : P3 and MAD search patterns

In order to get a MAD in a limited zone, I fly a "zig zag" pattern at 160-180 kts and of course low altitude, but that pattern that I draw placing waypoints is not always followed by the plane, sometimes it goes on orbiting some waypoint around for a turn or two and then continues the waypoint scheme.
I believe this has to deal with the turn radius the plane needs to make the course changes, but I am no sure.
Any suggestions?
Thx a lot.

Set the waypoint for the end of each run well outside the area you want to search, with the waypoint for the next run only slightly outside. The waypoint well wide gives the plane plenty of area to make the initial turn so it starts the next run in the correct position.

On second thought, my advice is for a ladder pattern, not a zigzag.

For a zigzag, try turning your plane away from the direction you want to turn (desired turn angle + 180 degrees) instead of turning directly into it. The turns become loops instead of straight angles (which the plane can't pull off).

Take note that the plane will turn sharper if your speed is higher besides in the game it doesn't makes a difference if you fly your MAD runs with 150 or 350kts. Furthermore if your speed is high you are able to cover more ground in less time which reduces the possibility that the sub is slipping past you.

I tried this and may be some kind of solution, although I believe there must be some bug here.

There's no bug, nothing turns on a dime, especially not a flying bus.

Yes, being more carefully with distances and radiuses keep it good.

Notice that turn radius is inversely proportional to flight altitude. Plane won't turn sharp close to sea surface.

I ve tried this but found that distance between waypoints is what really matters when you want to turn the plane.
