I played a custom mission with Smuock and Beer (made by Beer).
Setting :
- Smuock : Accoustics, Radar, ESM/MAD, IRDS (P-3 MS with me)
- Beer : Kilo SS & Akula-I (he played on two PCs)
- Me : TACCO/Pilot (P-3 MS with Smuock)
Situation :
A small U.S. Convoy was underway in the SE Mediteranean near the Libyan coast, course due West approx 30nm away from the coast. The convoy was approaching a Russian Anchorage off the Libyan coast. At/near this Anchorage is a Udaloy class and according to Intel 2 Kilo Class Subs have left the Anchorage a couple of hours ago to intercept the Convoy. To make the day even brighter an Akula-I is probably closing in from the NNW. The convoy consists of 2 FFGs (incl. a Helo each) and a ... Further there are some Neutral Vessels around ranging from small Fisherboats to a SuperTanker closing in from the NNW. Your goal as P-3 is to find and destroy all Hostile Submarines - sounds simple huh ?
Mission :
I started off near the Territorial Zone of the Libyans, but made damn sure I stay out of Territorial Waters, lest the Udaloy takes me for Target Practice. First Job of the day was getting a good Surface Picture which showed just the Neutrals, the Convoy and the Udaloy. I then decended to 300ft, turned on MAD and deployed a buoy line barrier (about 6 buoys) with a rough 10nm spacing to the south and another barrier (5 buoys) to the north, again with a 10nm spacing. The distance to the Convoy was more then 10nm on each buoy so I guess I either get Neutrals or Bad guys on it.
About half an hour in mission I got the first whiff on one of the western buoys. When I flew in and checked with some more buoys and MAD runs I found the first Kilo. That one did put up a good fight as it was able to decoy my first Torpedo but the second one found its mark. Interesting enough, after the hit, I saw the Kilo slowly surfacing and then slowly slipping below the waves.
Make that 1-0 for the Good guys! During the whole prosecution I got a Hot buoy (but no bearing) two times farther to the east. Off we go - investigating, and lucky me during the Transit I got a MAD return, 2 DICASS (one shallow/one deep) confirmed it as something not-US (50hz line), a couple of buoys and 2 or 3 MAD runs later, I was fairly confident of his course and classification and came in for my Attack run, this time I learned my lesson and instead of closing in from behind, I choose to come down barreling his projected course and nail him head one. And that worked beautifully (this time), to be honest I was lucky as I shot that one based on a SWAG (Scientifc Wild Ass Guess). The Replay showed that it entered the water barely in front of the sub and it was over in a matter of seconds. Hooyah - 2-0 for the Good guys.
Ok, 2 down 1 to go ... so it's time to head north. I put some buoys (colocated deep/shallow) in the free space between the convoy and my northern buoy barrier and waited. And then I started headscratching ... when all buoys were up they were all cold, except the one near the SuperTanker and on the buoy only the Super Tanker was visible. When the Tanker moved down SSE the second buoy got on, again only the Tanker visible and nothing else. Thats when it hit me - Beer is doing a "Down Persicope" on me, means he must be hiding beneath the Tanker. After some detection work, I confirmed my guess with a MAD run, because it turned up two MAD returns and on the 2nd confirmation even gave a definite SAD return on the MAD screen. Ok, now thats one hell of a Tricky situation, how do you bomb an Akula from underneath that Tanker without accidentaly killing him ? Solution : I came up from behind exactly along the course of the Tanker, set my Torp to a ceiling of 150ft and a Runout bearing along the course of the Tanker. I released about 2000yrds behind the Tanker and lucky me not long after that Accoustics got some loud explosions and the dead Akula appeared on the Nav Map. And Beer never even heard the Torpedo closing in. Make that 3-0 for the good guys, which means time for some crew rest ... hehe.
While I have written mostly about the things I didnt I dont want to forget the work that Smuock did as my Sensor Operator, especially with Accoustics and MAD. Without him it would have been a lot harder. One very important thing, even more in MS games is Voice Communication. It proved really helpfull when he for example had bearing lines on the Grams but couldnt mark them, instead he called out bearings so I could get a picture of whats happening.
Lessons Learned :
- When playing MS use Voice communications!
- If you attack a sub from the Stern and he hears your Torpedo, chances are good that he can evade it
- If you attack a sub from the bow you better have a good idea where he is going and how fast he is going there, otherwise you will overshoot your target and your torpedo will be a sure miss or hit something not intended.
- Expect the unexpected
- Even if a Sub is hiding beneath a surface ship it will show 2 MAD returns !!
