Trying to beat the N.Atlantic Convoy Mission..

This TU-22 is tearing me up!!

Any advice on how to thwart these guys?

Edit - alright..this mission is completely unplayable against these guys..air radar does NOT pick them up at all so I have nothing to shoot at, this is becoming extremely frustrating!!!

When you think the ASMs are incoming launch your chaff (ALL of it) and manuver behind your chaff clouds.

Thank you! Will give it a try...one chaff doesn't seem to do the trick, should I wait until they are kinda close? Within a couple miles? Or further out...

Is the backfire relatively 'stealth'? Wondering why I never pick him up on radar :(

Nope..really doesn't make a difference lol

He fires a solvo of 3 -4 missles..if chaff is effective against one or two, the rest get you shortly thereafter..and since I can NEVER pick him up on radar I really have no defense (CIWS is ineffective as well against more than one, if lucky).

This may be 'realistic' but makes for a very unplayable mission :(

The reason why the Backfire/AS-4 is so difficult is because the stock doctrines for the Kitchen make it come in at 300 feet off the deck and ESM can't counterdetect it until it's 10nm away. As I'm sure you've noticed, the LWAMI 3.10 update will correct these deficiencies and make the AS-4 manageable with either the SM-2 or chaff.

With Stock DW-LWAMI 3.09, your best bet for dealing with them, as TLAM mentions, is chaff. Make sure your ESM autocrew is on, along with your air and surface search radars. Radar may or may not give you any warning, but you should get an ESM hit from the missiles and probably the launching aircraft too.

Here's the drill:

Know your chaff hotkeys. Have the launcher fully loaded.
Keep an eye on ESM and radar. Hit F5 to switch to map view frequently while you're doing your ASW work.
Once you know the Backfire is out there, turn abeam to him. Verify all chaff launchers are loaded.
As the first hint of a missile on ESM, start firing chaff immediately. Get to Nav, mark the unknown contact AIR/Missile, and rightclick fire an SM-2. While that's happening, turn astern to the launching aircraft to reduce your radar profile relative to the chaff.
Reload SM-2 and fire again, if possible
Reload chaff
Turn to the opposite beam to ready the other side's chaff launchers.
Rinse and repeat.

I've actually beaten a Kirov one on one (shooting SS-N-19 shipwrecks--which are worse than Kitchens) using this technique, so it can be done. The difficulty comes from the fact that they hit you while you're doing ASW, which kills your reaction time. Seconds matter.

Is the backfire relatively 'stealth'? Wondering why I never pick him up on radar :( Negtive the Backfire is as stealty as a greyhound bus. Its simply firing ASMs from oustide your radar horizion using off board targeting by two nasty Kilo SSKs.

Honestly I've only beaten this mission a few times. Its all about luck and preperation.
