Background

I am the pilot of an MH-60 helo, stationed aboard FFG De Wert, currently in US base in Djibouti.

My ship, FFG De Wert experienced engine trouble. She was undergoing emergency repairs in Djibouti, so wasn't in a position to be helping me with this mission. While FFG is under repairs, I was temporarily rebased to Djibouti airbase.

We received intel that a Chinese Kilo sub has mined the strategic Bab el Mandeb strait at the southern end of the Red Sea this morning. The intel indicated that Bab el Mandeb was probably mined at its narrowest point, between Perim island to the North East, and Djibouti coast to the West.

Since there were no Navy minesweepers or mine hunters in the area, my task was to act as "emergency mine hunter" and locate the mines the Chinese Kilo has sown. I couldn't sweep the mines of course, but at least I could locate them, and draw their position on the map.

Intel indicated that the Kilo probably retreated towards secret Chinese base on Soccotra island (to the East). After I locate all the mines, I was to locate, and sink the Kilo itself.

It shouldn't have gotten too far…

Important: FIRST I was to locate the mines, THEN go after the Kilo.

There was a friendly French sub in the area, and its last known position was drawn on the map. I was to ID my target with certainty before releasing any weapons!

I was warned that hostile militants are known to operate in this area: Intel suggested my loadout includes some Hellfire missiles in case you need to deal with land based threats.

Transit

I immediately ordered a course which would take us out to sea away from hostile land masses and up towards the strait.

After 10 minutes we received a radio message that satellite recon of Perim island had shown some suspicious looking installations, and asking me to divert and survey the island. The message also stated to exercise caution as hostile militants operate in the area.

I set up a manual solution on the island and prepared to approach…

Perim Island

As I approached the island I detected a SAM site using ESM…

I turned countermeasures to autmoatic fire, and hit the deck, coming in full speed at 100ft above the ocean. I also targetted a hellfire missile on the suspicipus installation so that I could return fire quickly.

2 minutes later and I've got enemy missile lock and my finger jabs the hellfire launch button, as a SAM goes screaming past the cockpit window. My autocrew take over and jink the aircraft away launching countermeasures as they go…

Suddenly the enemy missile lock warning goes silent; The SAM site has been destroyed, so I head in to survey the island… I make a nice slow pass at 40 feet.

Bab el Mandeb AAR continued...

Mine Hunting

Now it's off to search for mines! I head to the narrowest point in the strait and lay a couple of sonabuoys, then I drop into a 100 foot hover and extend the dipping sonar…

I detect some shrimp in passive mode, and switch over to active mode to search for mines... there they are, I mark 7 mines.

I put the DICASS towards the northern end of the minefield into active mode to double check I never missed a mine at the northern end and then I head to the southernmost mine and dip again… This time I mark 3 more mines.

Kilo Detection

I moved a little bit more South and dipped a third time but I detected no additional mines, so I think I got them all. I then header East of the mines to start searching for the Kilo… I tried dipping in a couple of locations but no Kilo on either passive or active search…

I then headed into the last known position circle and dropped a couple of buoys and went to dip at the Eastern edge of the circle… but still no Kilo. And no French sub either!

I then reposition to the Southern edge of the circle and try again… This time I get a couple of low frequency engine lines! Woohoo... I've got a passive contact at 194 degrees so I head off down that bearing, dipping every 3nm and the engine lines get stronger each time…

Kilo Prosecution

After awhile, I get two engine lines and the classification filter states that it is a Kilo… Great.
http://www.sunim.plus.com/afteraction/babelmandeb/images/1245.jpg

I switch to active mode but I get an odd result! There is an active return but it's on a different bearing from the kilo… So I continue to fly down the original bearing because I got a positive classification on the target so I know it's definately the kilo. My active return must be the French sub.

I stop and dip the hydrophone again some time later down the track, and the engine lines have firmed up a lot. Also, I get an active return down the correct bearing…
http://www.sunim.plus.com/afteraction/babelmandeb/images/1257.jpg http://www.sunim.plus.com/afteraction/babelmandeb/images/1258.jpg

I deploy the MAD sensor and start a 50kts run along the bearing to the active contact with a mark 50 torpedo switched to circular search mode and assigned to the active return.

MAD, MAD, MAD! I dop the weapon!
http://www.sunim.plus.com/afteraction/babelmandeb/images/1303.jpg

DISASTER! My crew informes me that I have just killed the French sub! Oh no! Okay, time to look back and see what evidence I mis-read!!

When I had two engine lines on the narrowband sonar screen and the classification read "Kilo" maybe there were other classifications... I just checked. Doh! It always says "Kilo" when there are only two engine lines.
I just went back and looked when there were three engine lines the classification said "Han", ie. a nuclear sub!! So it really was a French nuke sub.
And of course there was that second active contact I got. Now that I look at it, the other active contact was much closer to the hydrophone yet I got no engine lines in the narrowband screen? What could do that? A QUIET sub like a diesel Kilo maybe?!!! Doh!!!

OK, off to try to reaquire that other active return! I had dropped all contacts during the previous procesution to clear up the nav map, but after an hour or so I successfully reaquired it…
http://www.sunim.plus.com/afteraction/babelmandeb/images/1401.jpg

Another MAD run in, and I've got a positive contact, so off goes my second mark 50 set in circular search pattern…
http://www.sunim.plus.com/afteraction/babelmandeb/images/1414.jpg

Hit! …and that's the mission complete!

Conclusion

The Kilo Class is quiet!! Passive detection is impossible even very close aboard, so any active return which has no engine lines on passive is almost certainly a deisel submarine such as a Kilo.

When the mission designer warns you there is a friendly sub in the area, and you get a MAD contact, drop the hydrophone and check ALL the engine lines, not a torpedo. Drop the torpedo only after you are 100% sure of the classification.
