View Full Version : FFG launched helos: Where's the dipping sonar!?

My helos never seem to use their dipping sonar. I've even downloaded a modified doctrine file that supposedly makes helos more likely to employ it, but no go.
It's dissapointing because I can't afford to be using up all my helo bouys (sp) all the time. I'd rather have a helo dip and run, giving me the link data if they find something interesting. I like to save bouys (sp) for when I'm sure there is a target in the area.
How do I get the AI helos launched from my ship to use the dipping sonar?

Not possable.
However IRL the FFG-7 Class Frigates carry SH-60B LAMPS III Seahawks (not the MH-60Rs that are in game) which are equiped only with Sonobuoys and MAD, no ALFS. So it maybe strange but its realistic... :2ct:

Speaking of MAD do the embarked helos actually get MAD hits? I've been playing the Dirty Atoll scenario and have flown my helicopters over the area North of the island in 500 yd swaths and have yet to get a Madman from them for the hostile submarine.

In LW/Ami 3.02, you can order a helo to dip by using a fly-to waypoint and not assigning any waypoints after it.

Yes. LWAMI expanded on that to make them drop torpedoes as soon as they got a mad hit too, at least in some cases. (I can't remember friendly fire being an issue for that...)
They suddenly give an unidentified link contact very close to them while they are otherwise speeding along, no buoys in the water, etc.

Was there a sub in that mission? I certainly can't remember any. Then again, it's been a while.
