Deciding the best way to know how to kill subs is to play them now and then, Oneshot took a Seawolf out with me to hunt down Vasili. Oneshot handled ship control and sonar while I did TMA and fire control.
We started out in the southern end of the AO, and we plodded along north marking neutrals, getting our synergy warmed up. Eventually we picked up a faint tonal deep, in the SE corner of the AO. I was skeptical about the contact at first b/c it was in the location that a mirror to a contact we had over the layer would have been. Coming shallow, it dropped off the TA, so at that point we knew it was a sub... But, the briefing said there could be neutral english, chinese, or french SSN's around, so we needed a bit more info. When the sub increased from 1 to 3, 5, and then 10 knots, we were pretty sure we weren't dealing with AI. It also appeared that he was trying to slip in behind us, but that was just one of two valid solutions on opposite sides of the intersection point, but I digress.
Things got a little desperate at this point. An Akula II at that range (5000 yds at the time of best solution) was close enough to have detected us, and probably had us from nearly the beginning. The good news was that he was deep, and would probably go shallow before firing missiles. But, it appeared that he was sprinting to get behind us (part of my bias from the previous match against him), and at these ranges, a short sprint completely trashes TMA. I was relieved when the TA gave me another line after a turn. We had no triangulation data, but short on time, I decided to fire. Oneshot took us very deep to prevent a shkval shot and I preemptively deployed a few decoys and had us reverse course to deal with the counterfire we knew would come.
I accidentally left the RTE at the pre-reqcuisition settings, so when we shot they enabled early. This worked to our advantage, because he then enabed his early. After we preenabled and resteered, Vas exceeded crush depth.
Not my favorite way to win, but after yesterday's match, I'll take it.
