Welcome to the Submarine Forum!
The Tips and Tricks fourms of the CADC are here to be a guide to new players to learn the ropes of Dangerous Waters, and to give experienced players the opportunity to learn and share advanced tactics. Everyone should feel free to ask any questions about playing DW, to share their knowledge with others, and to provide feedback and counterpoints to the tactics suggested. For those of you new to the genre, I think you'll find that the naval warfare simulation community is especially courteous and supportive of its members.
A few things a you'll need to know first:
Game Version: Dangerous Waters was originally released for online-only sales from Battlefront.com back in spring 2005. Most of the older threads posted on this forum were meant for Dangerous Waters versions 1.00-1.01+HF (HF= "hotfix", a portion of 1.02 that was released early), with the discourse generally tracking forward as the game version progresses. Most of the data here is up to date through the acoustics model of 1.03, that is, it takes the layer into consideration. As of 6/22/07, we don't have too much specific to 1.04, but beyond the range-speed variability with torpedoes, not much has changed.
Mods: The Sensors and Weapons Realism Mod by LuftWolf and Amizaur (refered to as LW/Ami for short) has become extraordinarily popular with DW players. The mod fixes a lot of issues present in stock DW, changes a few loadouts, and generally makes the game more realistic and balanced, especially in games involving different platform classes (Air, surface, sub). Most of the subjects here were written before the mod came out, so if you're running the mod, a few things may be a bit different. Again, many of the newer posts will be about tactics using the LW/Ami mod. If something you're posting here is specific to the Mod, make a point to say so.
Forum Rules:
I shouldn't really need to tell you all to treat everyone with courtesy, that's rarely a problem in this community. What I do ask of everyone here is to keep the goals of this forum in mind when posting. To be an effective learning tool, it needs to stay organized and uncluttered. So please, if you have a question, make sure it isn't already covered in the existing threads, stay on-topic in the threads, and try to be as specific and helpful in your questions/answers as you can. Also, OneShot and I may from time to time police the threads and trim some things down or move things around. Don't be offended if something of yours gets chopped; it's not because we don't like you, we're just keeping the forum organized so people can find what they need quickly.
One last rule: If you've found a way to cheat at the game, keep it to yourself. That is the one thing that will cause me to come running in with my moderator hat on faster than anything else. Of course, the line between cheating and above-board or inadvertance is sometimes rather blurred, so I'll give some leeway in ambiguous cases. Discussions on how to prevent becoming victim of the "known" cheats are OK too. And of course, like any moderator, I'll always give someone a warning that they've crossed the line before I take it further (and that's never happened yet, and hopefully never will). Basically, I want this forum to be used to help people learn to play the game better so they can have more fun, not to teach people how to ruin other people's games. Fortunatly, between 1.03 Beta and the LW/Ami mod, most of the known cheats have been fixed, so this shouldn't be a big issue.
Well, I think that about does it. I hope you'll find this forum to be very helpful and that it makes learning DW a bit less intimidating. Happy hunting!
