I am working on some new scenarios and I wonder if we would have enough interested players to play an scenario that may take up to 4 hours to be played.
Of course I do not mean simply placing the units at 100 NM away but an scenario that requires a lot of skill and patience from the players not only to fight their ship but to develope strategy and tactics.

We do not need many playerd for this match but serious, skilled and comitted that can dedicate some hours instead of the usual 1 or 2 for a match.

The scenario would involve the most advanced units, from Seawolf to the latest Kilo and Akula.

So far the scenario is not much advanced, pending in knowing if there is interest from players and to define how many payable units I add.
Also it is a great chance for serious multistation.
Please vote on the poll about all this so we can decide wether we want such scenario or not.

More and more, my position on this issue is moving in SeaQueen's direction. There are a lot of ways to try to set up a scenario so that it can be played in a short time without skewing the balance, but none of those ways are reliable or otherwise satisfactory. In many cases, I accept them because it's the best thing we have available.

But, if more players are willing to give up, say, an afternoon instead of two hours, I think we'll have much more satisfying matches. A lot of the time I play, I have two or three back to back matches anyways. I'd rather have one long, rewarding one than two or three that felt cheap in some way.

I'd like to add that I too am working on a large, long scenario (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=104550). Work on it is suspended for the time being, as finals are just about to begin over here. But I might be able to have it ready in mid to late may or so.

Very intereresting scenario Molon.
I see you and me are on the same wave lenght about this.

I think I can have mine, wich it is a bit less complex than yours sooner and that we can use it as first of this long scenarios series.

However for this to work we do need a number of reliable, skilled, with stable connections and interested players so we can consolidate teams.

Here is the scenario I am working with. Still not finished and open to some modifications.

I have selected an area of about 150 NM of deep waters surrounded by islands. This will be the Operations theathre.
Here the US have to secure merchant and Naval traffic that is moving between the different harbours.
We have multiple merchant vessels running fast and some Naval units (AI) as well. Those ships represent normal merchant traffic connecting the different harbours of the scenario althouth their routing would be "hard to predict" in some cases.
On the area there area some land installations such airport and naval bases or harbours.

The Objective of the Russian side is to enter this large operations theathre and disrupt to the maximum naval activity.
They are free to engage enemy merchant ships, naval units and even destroy ant land installation they may think would give them tactical advantage. They can even mine some of the enemy harbours knowing that merchan traffic at one moment or another will pass throug there. AND!!!!! they can replenish expended weapons or even make repairs in some camuflaged submarine tender the Russian Navy have sent there. (of course if the Tender is not discovered and sunk by the US Navy first)

There are many targtes to engage and the area is large enough to allow fast speed movements.
I wanted to avoid such scenario where you start already in silent running and after one hour you have moved 3 miles.
Here if the players (US or Russian) want to do something they have to move and make noise but at the same time they have the choice when to slow down and ambush the enemy.

The weather is not very good, waters are 3000+ deep.

The initial forces human manned would be
Russian side:

1 Akula II
1 Kilo Improved

For the US Navy

1 FFG
1 Seawolf
1 P-3

I may add more or change some of this units as the scenrio is being developed.
There will be as well some AI units, although I will make them not to be the real threat for the subs.

The US side will start at harbour and in the Airport and they will have to "Rush" to the operations area.
The Russian sub are also out of the operation area and will have to make a good speed to get there ans start sinking although early detection of them would not be easy for the US.
My idea is that we really have the choice to move like Naval units, making decisions about how to get there, how fast.........
The area is quite big... but you never know

I have the feeling that we can have much fun with such maps, but we do need to start gathering a nice team for this and also define when it would be convenient for the players to have this match since this one could last 4 to even 6 hours, we need to select a time that allow us to play it with free time.
Multistation is welcomed if a solid team shows up.
I will post some map screenies about the operations area soon.

Gentlemen I need your imput on all this and those of you interested in the project please post here your interest and when during the week would be good for you such match. :feedback:

Scenario can be ready for next week. Are you ready for it?
It is up to us to make this happen.

I can't make any definite promises of being available over the next two weeks. but it does sound like something I'd like to try.
