If I am getting a broadband contact but no DEMON data can I assume I am not close enough to the target? If that is true how close do I have to be to receive DEMON info? If there is set range and is it the same for all subs?

Demon data can fade in and out, but it doesn't happen often. It used to happen all the time in SC, but in DW it's rare to have a contact that's close enough to give you a BB contact but not DEMON data.
I wish I could give you a more specific answer, but DEMON contact is so rare in DW that I don't have the experience to give you anything more solid than that.

Ouch. Guess its time for me to research how to determine speed without using the DEMON display.

Btw. I'm not sure if you are already aware of this, but if you have assigned a NB Tracker to the same contact before assigning a BB tracker you wont get any DEMON info either (or so I think). That might be a contributing factor to your problem.

This is a bug that I think they fixed in 1.03. I'm not completely positive. If it is still a bug, it's only present in the Akula and Kilo; the US subs are fine.
But yes, if you're using a russian sub, and you originally marked a contact in NB and you then marked it in BB, and you subsequently do not get DEMON on the BB tracker, try removing the trackers and re-marking in BB.
I can assure you that the bug from way back that required you to drop the whole contact to do this has been snuffed out, so if there is anything left of the bug, it is only a minor inconvenience rather than something that actually effects the boat's performance in combat.
PS: I should refine my statement to say that for ASW, DEMON data is rare. DEMON data in ASUW is reasonably available in some acoustic conditions. But, as someone who mainly plays MP, there isn't much occasion to use DEMON in ASUW. Consider that there are no Red skimmers, so there is only incidental ASUW using Blue subs. Consider further that the Akula vs. FFG isn't exactly fair on the FFG, and that the Kilo's sonar sucks bad enough that you don't get DEMON on the FFG very much. Hence, why I don't use the DEMON station all that much.
